(not bragging or suggesting printer setup is beneath me more that nothing makes me feel quite as befuddled as driver selection and I now feel like I've learned nothing in the last 10 years of my life)
@Maenad I'm glad to know that I'm not the only person who feels like printers remain as impenetrable now as they did 10 years ago.
I don't know how they do it.
@Gyrfalcon2138 security by obscurity is really bad practice but MAN does it work for printers
@Maenad The best is the driver download pages that have like, 8 different versions of the driver that all seem like they're the same but they're definitely not
Like this one is 115 MB - why does my computer need 115 MB of shit to print my goddamn cat pictures? Can I use this 20 MB one? I'm not sure - it looks like it doesn't have TWAIN. But I don't even like Mark Twain? I just... what?
@Maenad This toot brought to you by several years working for Housing IT in college where they had printers that I guess used crayons for ink or something?
Also the printers that, when too many jobs came in, would overwrite their own operating systems. That was cool too.
@Maenad i usually just go with Generic->PCL6
and maybe duplex and/or color if I feel adventurous in that moment 👶
@Maenad Imagine how Generation Z is going to feel trying to set the clock on a VCR.
