Other amusing "travelling to visit academic friends and hide in their labs" takes - the people hosting me are mostly iranian and one just asked if I wanted pizza for dinner and it took me 3 tries to understand what he was saying because it sounded like "pecha" until my portuguese friend shouted from the other room that he meant pizza.
