The hardest thing about grad school was the fact that there is no minimum.

You had checkpoints by which you needed to have completed a sufficient amount of work, but every day you could do as much as you wanted/needed.

And there was no minimum amount of background to have, either - more was always better, but at some point you had to stop acquiring it and start using it.

There also aren't (many) shortcuts.
