@candle It's reflexive - it's needed with some verbs, it indicates the subject of the action is also the object of it:
"Je me suis lavée" = "I've washed myself"
"Elle s'est cognée" = "She bumped/hit herself" (against a door frame or an ambushed piece of furniture, to take a random example that does absolutely not reflect my everyday life :< )
Coffee machine: Change my water filter!
Me: First gimme some coffee, then we'll talk

@sempervirenx Nah, it's full of vitamin C, that's definitely a kicker. Great for breakfasts precisely because of it. Sorry... ^^°
@candle Community, definitely.
Online spaces mostly haven't carried on our social rules at all (remember that thread about using tu or vous with strangers), probably because the people who built and populated them weren't the ones enforcing these rules in meatspace! :D
@sempervirenx @candle I HATE attention, so I usually grunt a inarticulate sound while nodding and smiling awkwardly, and people figure out I'm saying a greeting. That works, they're not picky, it's all about the gesture anyway. :p
@sempervirenx @candle I love languages and linguistics. If I hadn't sabotaged my studies, I would probably have gone into that field...
Thanks a lot for the compliment! ^///^

@candle We tend to say it when entering a closed space, either with few people or if it's silent and your entrance attracted attention...
In the bus, we only say it to the driver really. But anywhere else, like the waiting room at a doctor's, or a small shop when you can see the other people in when you enter... It's polite to greet them, but definitely not "mandatory" or anything! ^^°
@abgd @candle I'm reasonably certain most people find English easier than other languages - often, including their own. :x
It's not "simple" as in without any subtlety or rules or whatnot, but it's definitely *simplER* than a lot of others! Especially latin-alphabet ones, I know much less about others...
@candle Stative verb is the French "verbes d'état" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stative_verb)
In French, we learn them because, for example, they're the ones that use "être" instead of "avoir" as an auxiliary for past tenses... ^^°
@candle That's the trap of being born English. Your language is so simple you basically don't NEED to learn formal grammar... and then you're lost when tackling on foreign ones. :p
