i just found out french has a word for saying yes specifically to negative questions...

Because "yes" is an agreement, so if you answer an agreement to a negative: are you agreeing with the negative or the base statement? :<
So, we cleared up the confusion by having a word for "I DISAGREE with you, I'm with the POSITIVE statement" :<
@Louvelune haha it does make sense, in english we have to ask a lot for clarification of "yes" :P
@candle Well, not really... If the statement is negative, in French answering "no" grammatically agrees with the negation... But socially, answering no is perceived as antagonizing the interlocutor... %D
I've often had to clarify by restating my full opinion, either agreeing or countering what I answered to... ^^°
