@candle If you're seriously wondering why a word prinounced "ognon" is spelled with a i: like EVERYTHING in French, there IS an explanation!
... But you have to dig into the history of the word to find it, it's an artifact of old French... ^^°
The i actually ties to the "gn" sound, it used to be spelled "ign" in Old French; most words dropped the i over time, but a few didn't - like lord: "seigneur".
Oignon looks very counter-intuitive, so a recent spelling reforms recommends spelling it "ognon", more logical and in line with most others like agneau (lamb).
But it's *hard* to suddenly change a spelling like that, so oignon it still is for now. :x
