No it does not. Yes there is a lot of French. I think / hope that we will see more and more languages on the federated, most of them I won't understand AND THAT IS OKAY.
Toot in your own language!
If you want to only read english join an instance that is english-speaking only and look at the local timeline only!
Federated is for everyone. Other languages are not "polluting" it.
@Hiraelle The amazing thing about the wider fediverse is that I have seen many, many languages. Hebrew, German, French, Spanish, etc.

@Hiraelle multilingual is a practical approach to the federated feed, but do not paint the debate as black and white.
I imagine this is rather figuratively like the Tower of Bable and all it takes is a Rosetta Stone to help us understand each other. Many have suggested integrating a translate feature, which could either be a function on the toot or configured through user settings.
Let us not divide our instances by demographics, but embrace unity through understanding.

@Hiraelle I am sorry people have been so troubled by their ignorance of French. As with the internet as a whole, you can either find common ground, troll, or ignore.
Fortunately, trolling has been minimal from what I have seen.

I don't feel attacked or anything (just to be clear :) ), but it's kinda rude of them to say that, so I felt like tooting what I thought about it.
@Hiraelle I can appreciate that and would rather you draw attention to it than allow it to run rampant. Etiquette for mastodon isn't well established yet, so civility could help set the standard for behavior.
@Hiraelle You're alright. The people freaking out about it are just used to having everything filtered down to their own language by advertisers who've got them used to the feeling that having to think about something you see is bad. I will talk all day about how much more sense English would make if we excised the changes made by Normans, because it would, but I like seeing other languages in the feed. Plus, not that hard to get the gist of what most people are saying.

I do not speak French. (Parlez vous no francaise?) But I like your statement about the different languages. Maybe it helps me to get a better understanding of the french language. My daughter will start to learn it in Summer

@Hiraelle I hope so too. Tonight she attends her first Soiree francaise at her school. So the kids get their first touch with French in a nice and partylike atmosphere

@Hiraelle as an anglophone all I can say is Hai Oui Ya Da Haan Shì qǐng. more language is better
@Hiraelle is there a list of instances by language? This is the closest thing I've found (https://goo.gl/ZGxttD), and while there are a couple of instance flagged as being primarily French, there aren't any flagged for any other languages. Many of the instances are just described as "N/A" 🤔

@Hiraelle even that only works for some of instances. Octodon.social has no description whatsoever (at least that I could find), meaning that you wouldn't have any idea what the instance was all about until after you'd created your account 😓
