I'd recommend getting a translation of the Hui-Ming Ching (it's less crazy symbolic) and Understanding Reality by Chang Po-tuan (crazy symbolic, but foundational and beautiful)

Beyond "cis" and "trans", consider a system of modifiers for:
- species whose sex is determined by genes
- species whose sex is determined by temperature or other environmental factors
- species whose sex is determined by social status
- species whose sex is determined by infection by a parasite such as Wolbachia
