Game where you fight the final boss midway through but they're already injured and when you beat them they're completely defeated, yet you have to keep going? And when you get to the final boss they're fine, they've never seen you before, and they're much harder. You get them down to 20% health and they're battered, so they activate their emergency plan: Travel back in time to fight you when you're weaker!
