@grime_witch When I get that feeling, I just rewatch Intermezzo, which I can confirm still holds up pretty great. The rest... I dunno. I get the feeling the pacing is gonna be murder.

@kara_dreamer I see it almost like knitting. It's just something she likes doing, throwing spears everywhere, suplexing boulders just because she can. Having a moving target to practice against just makes it pleasantly challenging.

Am I fully out of "reading the original material" and into "self-indulgent projection?" ...Yeah, probably. And I don't regret a damn thing.

I still keep a save right before the Undyne the Undying fight. I like to imagine it as her and the kid, in a little hollowed out stone arena somewhere in the middle of a forest on the surface, somewhere they keep secret.

And then the fireworks fly.

Not really to get better, even. Just to have the joy of sparring, and to become better friends by spending an evening throwing lasers at each other.

Because hoooooly fuck, that fight is the good shit and I will always love replaying it. The music, the patterns, the way the patterns sync to the way the music evolves... It's incredible.

@kara_dreamer Yeah, that's a good point. Something like an idealized police force or a teacher, to come break up misunderstandings before they get too rough. And let's be real... Would Undyne really be happy somewhere without the chance to spar, if only against a stove? I don't think so. 😄

That's Black Rose in the first episode of .hack//SIGN, and the moment that I think I realized that I could be more than just a function of some boy's desire to get off. She outright rejects, in the first episode, the idea that she is just a love interest. And she does it while holding a sword as big as she is.

I think that was the moment that I realized fiction could be more than just dumb love stories between a straight boy and the first girl he sees, too.

@kara_dreamer Y'know, that's a good question, and I think it speaks to kind of... the storybook nature of Undertale as a work. A royal guard exists, despite there being nothing in the universe for it to guard against, right?

I think I like the thought of "amorphous blob shadows that periodically show up" more than anything. Other monsters? Infighting? Then suddenly you've introduced Game of Thrones politics, and that feels... more than just wrong to me. Like violating something sacred.

Course, that's just my take.

Undyne speaks to the part of me that was obsessed with fighting games. I felt like if I could just get strong enough, then people would have to take me seriously. This fucker can't say I don't exist if I can perfect-KO him, right? But that's not how the world works. And it made me fucking miserable when I lost.

But Undyne is the positive side of all of that. In her strength, she doesn't have to care what people think. She's respected, mostly, not feared. She fights to protect, not to destroy.

A better role model than Marisa Kirisame, anyway. But without a body, you take what you can get, I guess.
