@jasminehenry I'm now wondering if I'd go as far as to argue that western RPG design, where the player character is usually an empty shell for the player to flesh out at will, actually encourages games accidentally making large parts of their story more about the non-player characters and the world than about "the protagonist", with the player merely a connecting thread in other people's stories
@jasminehenry a related thing here is that "protagonist" in games is often equated with "playable character" when that's not always the case and especially games have a lot of capacity for telling stories that are "not about you"
e.g. arguably Ishmael is not the protagonist of Moby Dick, the player isn't *really* who the Myst games are about, etc
