Comrade Angles @Angle

So one of my roommates just showed me an ice cube from our freezer - with this icicle big stalagmite rising from the top. Anyone know how that happens? :/

@IrisKalmia Nah, just the usual ice cube tray that you stick in the freezer. :/

@Angle I'm not sure how that happened and it'd be a bit difficult to figure out now.

Is it upsetting or something?

@IrisKalmia no, it's awesome! I just wanna know how it works. XD

@Angle Yeah it is! I was having a hard time parsing the :/ used ^^;

@IrisKalmia :/ translates roughly as "unsure". About anyhting or everything. XD

@Angle Some sort of liquid or water dripped atop the ice cube.

@ayachan Theres nothing to drip though! And no corresponding icy stalactite. :/

@Angle If the freezer door was left open at some point, condensation might form atop the freezer and drip onto the cube. And someone could always have broken off the associated stalactite.

@Angle Usually only happens with distilled water, but it can happen out the tap too. Basically ice forms from the outside, a hole is left in the top, and the water/ice spike rises from there. -Zu

@Angle I have seen that before, and if I remember correctly, it has to do with the way the water freezes. I think it was the outside freezing first, and since water expands as it freezes, it pushes the center up.
