Comrade Angles @Angle

Hmm. So people often talk about how social media is bad. Do y'all think thats mostly restricted to corporate social media? Or does that extend even to Mastodon? I'll admit, I spend more time on Mastodon than I probably should, but I think it provides lots of benefit too. XD

@Angle At least with Mastodon you can join another instance.

@Angle I have chronic fatigue syndrome and I basically would not be able to talk to other people outside of social media!! I think it's mostly corporate stuff that's bad. Like the way Twitter is run etc. I think if social media is done right it can be really beneficial

@c8rz @rosjackson Hmm, yeah thats a good point. We should still probably keep an eye out for unintended consequences of mastodon so we can ameliorate them, but I guess we're already doing that. XD

@Angle It's a matter of moderation, so it might extend to Mastodon. But the deal with corporate social media is that the people who run it are actively trying to make it addictive, no matter the social or health consequences. That's not true of the non-corporate web.

@rosjackson @Angle ◽ Not of many individual admins, but a _group_ can go down a path that none of its members wanted, and Mastodon started on the path of “like Twitter but not quite” AFAIK. I _think_ it only takes mutual background anxiety about whether people will forget you exist to keep up an attention fragmentation arms race once it's gotten started…

Even if you didn't start the fire, it may not go out by itself. I hope y'all will use the new chances well. Might be harder than it looks.

@Angle I suspect that most of the people complaining about social media are kind of from the same mindset as people who complain about how kids these days spend too much time on their computers and cellphones and never interact with the real world anymore. <.<

@woozle Eh, I can agree that corporate social media, at least, is pretty sketchy. I think Mastodon and the like are all right? But we still shouldn't get complacent. XD

@Angle I would say that with corporate social media you are feeding their algorithms with your participation. The more you use it, the more they understand how to market you to advertisers. That’s just not present in Mastodon.

@Angle I'd say on it's own, it's simply a tool.

TBH I am -exponentially- better at talking on social media than I am literally anywhere else (which made it an infuriating mixed blessing when birbsite was going to hell in a handbasket). But that comes with the social chaos of being able to see the surface thoughts of MANY people just by clicking a tab.

The big difference is here people -try- to moderate and create a safe, pleasant space. Birbhell and fashbook just want your revenue.

@KawaSeadrake Haha yeah I'm way better at talking online than I am in person too. I agree with you wholeheartedly on that. XD

@Angle I think it all depends on how/why you're using it. I, and a lot of other disabled people, use social media as a way to stay connected to the outside world. So I see social media as a great tool that can be used well, or misused.
