...Has anyone ever tried to write out a real life tech tree, like from a video game? I know it's probably not practical, but it'd be interesting to see the attempt. XD
@cooler_ranch No, like, one attempting to describe real life technologjez and technological progression. XD
@Angle For CryptPad project, we use a tech tree in lieu of a roadmap. You can see it here: https://cryptpad.fr/code/#/1/view/R1kZC1mY9khSsrLCyJT+CA/t5Eey4SVS+TpaZWmhrCTvIP50IzX7GR4gnud9UclR6Y/
My colleague got the idea from Dominic Tarr who uses one for SSB project.
@cjd Oh now that's cool. I should do that for Agora. :/
@Angle apparently one of the upcoming dwarf fortress updates is going to involve a historical list of technological achievements, up to about c. 1400, for use in, uh, modeling scientific discovery, i guess? i don't know if it's in tree form, though, or just a unstructured list of items
@xax Haha seriously? I need to catch up with dwarf fortress again, I haven't played that in forever. XD
@Angle apparently there's a whole learning and scholarship system now, and it works via, i guess, reading off of some gigantic file that is toady's compilation of every school of knowledge extant in medieval times. i have no clue if that's just some raws file in the game's directory, but that might be a place to look if you're curious.
@xax I'll definitely do that at some point. XD
@Angle Like cyberspace decks growing on trees?
@LWFlouisa Haha no, I was thinking more just like a diagram of techs and the ways to get between them. XD
@Angle You know you're a bored programmer, when you build your own enigma machine on the fly.
I made it so that it rolls on a certain weak permutation, it forces an automatic reroll.
@Angle Arguably the Europa Universalis line of games kind of do this. Like, the World War II grand strategy games let the player work through a tree of industrial and economic and military technologies and strategies that are tolerably tree-like.
The Victoria games do so too, but in a more linear way ('Belgian researchers have discovered Existentialism!'), though the resulting inventions/innovations are more randomly generated.
@Angle A Tech Tree from an existing game from memory? Or create your own tech tree?
