Oh! While I'm at it, what about running shoes? Any advice for getting a good cheap pair? :/

@Angle

No.

You are totally on your own there.

Try walmart (if you feel like killing society).

@Angle
I recently got new balance zantes. They're normally $100 but you can often find them for less. If you are on an absolute minimal budget, Walmart has some shoes that will work but you'll probably want to upgrade as soon as possible.

@vector @Angle My only advice is go minimal. Thicker soles encourages landing on your heel, which is unnatural and transmits a lot of energy through your legs that can cause injury. (blame Nike for this). A thinner sole encourages a natural stride landing on the ball of your foot, allowing the arch of your foot and Achilles Tendon to absorb the brunt of the force, which your body is much more capable of handling long term.

@Angle @vector Your calves will hurt after running this way at first, so take it easy your first few runs. This is just your calves getting used to the increased stretching that comes from running. Doing stretches before and after, and walking a bit before running, can help minimize this.

@Angle If you’re good at running, any pair of shoes is free.

@Angle Asic shoes are pretty good, but not too cheap :/
