The internet is FULL of spaces like this, where people think an open comment/reply box is a free pass to respond to people's hard work with negativity.
It's unpleasant and makes for a pretty depressing and discouraging environment; people say things that they would *never* say to someone's face, because the culture has been grown here. It stifles creativity and silences people.
I don't know enough about the roots of the internet to understand fully where it comes from, but I hope we can change that.
- "But if they were calling out problematic behaviour..."
- "I believe constructive criticism should be welcomed."
- "Was there anything on the blog post to suggest that criticism was unwelcome? If not, how could they know that?"
- "If it's free to read online then the author should be prepared for criticism."

Or at least that's what I've witnessed lately. Lots of hostile or just impolite behavior from people assuming they have the right to criticise or judge your toots.
