@cassolotl Someone just reminded me that French has two distinct words for « Finnish ». Thought you’d like that information.

@PierreM @Shalena French and English are both littered with words that serve multiple purposes! :P

@cassolotl @PierreM And not the same, too!
You have ape/monkey, we have rivière/fleuve

@PierreM @Shalena There's something about butterflies and moths too, I remember being very confused when me and @Andrea had a conversation about that!

@cassolotl @PierreM @Andrea
OH YES
Literally, butterfly = papillon and moth = mite
Except English moth is actually « broader » and includes what we call « papillon de nuit » (night butterfly)

@Shalena @PierreM @Andrea I suspect I'm gonna continue to be confused about that, haha! :D

@Shalena @cassolotl @PierreM @Andrea

I feel like the colloquial rule in English is that "moths" are just creepy butterflies

@ChristianD @Shalena @PierreM @Andrea My understanding is that moths and butterflies have wings that close differently. Like... how do I describe this? Moths' wings fold inwards and slide over each other, and butterflies' wings close upwards and stay flat? :S

@cassolotl @ChristianD @PierreM @Andrea

I’m pretty sure there are moth of the « papillon de nuit » subcategory that close upwards :o

(Though I am, admittedly, not an expert on what is or isn’t a moth)

@Shalena @ChristianD @PierreM @Andrea Then I guess in English/UK those papillons de nuit would be considered butterflies?? (idkkkk)

Andréa @Andrea

@cassolotl @Shalena @ChristianD @PierreM and the opposite happens too, with zygaenas being mostly diurnal!

@Andrea @Shalena @cassolotl @PierreM

Not to confuse things further, but "mites" are a specific and different type of tiny non-insect arthropods in English

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mite

@cgx

For example, here, people talks about linguistics and insects ><'

@Shalena @ChristianD @Andrea @cassolotl @PierreM

@bakaniko @cgx @ChristianD @Andrea @cassolotl @PierreM

I came out to have a good time and I’m honestly feeling so attacked right now.

@Shalena

Ok, I was just showing to
@cgx
That people are not talking computer science, linux and free software :)

@ChristianD @Andrea @cassolotl @PierreM

@cassolotl @bakaniko @Shalena @cgx @Andrea @PierreM

"The time has come," the Mammoth said,
"To toot of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."

@bakaniko @cgx @ChristianD @Andrea @cassolotl @PierreM
Well they should follow more Witches.town accounts, we shitpost about a whole lot of things!
