If internet as proven anything, it's that power is taken by pricks most often than not.

I mean the gafa have obvious flaws, Stack Overflow and Wikipedia are run by some "elit"... Reddit has some moderation problems too. (understatement is my kink too, yes... )

And mastodon is far from perfect in this matter. The good thing though is changing instance is... if not easy, at least not as radical as just stopping using it and losing every contact you had there. But it's new, so maybe I'm still a bit too optimistic about it.

So it raises the question : How do you stop people aggregating power?

I mean, if we don't find a way, breaking the system will do little good in the long run, and will probably hurt a lot of people before that.

And even without pre-existing structure, social or otherwise, some people tends to take control, some other follow. It's a reproducible and falsifiable experiment.

So again, how do you stop people from accumulating power and then abuse it? And yes, I mean even in an anarchy.

And obviously, the answer can't be "an authority". An authority is a kind of power, so...

@Ambraven very interesting question, and though I have no references to give, wouldn't any social interaction involve a kind of authority? Wouldn't any social relation involve a social status, hence power?

Social interaction can happen between peers, or at least the authority can be restrained to a particular subject.

There is also the issue that supervision is sometimes necessary... (I don't think building anything without architect is a good idea...)

@Ambraven I think the concept of «instances» is a good step towards that goal. You stop people aggregating power by not aggregating the «value» in one place : in an economy of attention that would be «users».
When everything is compatible, people don't have an incentive to go to one particular node of the network so probably your users are gonna be scattered in many of the compatible systems.

I think the long term solution is to educate people and get them to run their own software.

It's not perfect but it's a start. Decentralised web has some issue too when it comes too verifying informations.

Education is still the best way to limit the effect of power aggregation, but in itself I don't think it is enough. :/
