Aguarès @Ambraven

So, mastodon, do you have advice for a smartphone without android, apple or microsoft?

@Ambraven I use a Jolla smartphone (for work, not my "main"), but I find it kinda limited (old hardware and "young" UI 🤔 ). But the idea is nice and you can use Android apps on it.

@Ambraven There are some free OS inpired by Android, like Replicant which is guaranted to be free/open-source and not spying on you, but very limited for everything that is not basic-phone-stuff. And Cyanogen/Lineage which is more of a "clean install of Android without pre-installed apps and Google apps" but it's still Android. I don't know if that's what you're looking for.

@myrrhashad ideally I would like more control and less gafa. I guess lineage would work for me but I don't really want to have to install it. I guess an android phone will have to do... :/

@Ambraven Oh, there's Fairphone too. Its materials are supposed to be "clean" in terms of slavery and you have a free OS with it. But I think the 1st version is disrupted, and the 2nd was scheduled for september. Also, I think some specific shops sell phones with Lineage, maybe ? But since I like to handle it myself, I didn't really look into it...

@Ambraven @myrrhashad ubuntu, firefox, tizen are dead, is there anything else? Jolla?

@Ambraven
- Sailfish OS: There's a recent one (the inoi r7) but i'm pretty sure it's only sold in russia.
- Tizen: Samsung Z2, pretty sure it's just sold in India (also it's full of security risks)
- I assume lineageOS is off the table since it's an android fork?

@Ambraven oh also there's the samsung Z4 for tizen which is newer

@Ambraven About SailfishOS, a "real" Linux, which sadly still isn't fully open-sourced: Although currently there are only low-end smartphones sold in Russia or India available with it, there'll be an official port for the Sony Xperia X out in the next months.

@Ambraven there are encrypted phones with special subscriptions, but I don't know if they got apps
